Summer Snack for Kids: Keeping it Healthy and Tasty.

Summer is almost upon us, and with it, the time to step outside and take the full impact of rays of sunshine. Summer days are beautiful, but they can play against us when trying to feed our children more healthily.
Snack time is probably one of the favorite times for children and adults alike. You get to calm that middle afternoon hunger monster by eating something out of the ordinary. Summer snacks for kids are not hard to come by, but they are some things you should take into consideration.
The vast majority of people use their snack time to consume quick and easy recipes that give them that extra push of energy to finish the day strong. But usually, quick and easy is a synonym of junk food, and we tend to translate that idea onto our children.
Do not get us wrong we have nothing against ice cream, chocolate, or any other delicious treats. Yet it is important to teach our children to find balance when feeding themselves; that way, when they grow up, they will be able to have a healthy relationship with food overall.

What constitutes a healthy summer snack for kids?

A healthy snack does not have to be boring. People hear the word “healthy”, and they go straight to think: “oh well, let us eat this bird food that tastes like a carton“. It is all about finding the balance in the force.
You can eat healthily and still eat your favorite foods and treats; you just need to change the way you make them.
Follow these basic guidelines to create great snack recipes for summer that your kids —and you— will love.
  • Prioritize protein over other macronutrients:
Protein is more filling than carbs or fats. Eating protein will keep your children full. Protein will also help them with their growth since protein is needed to create and regenerate muscle tissue. Furthermore, our bodies need protein for bone structure and blood cells.
  • Do not be afraid of artificial sweeteners:
No matter how many influencers tell you that artificial sweeteners are bad for you, the truth is that there is NO strong scientific evidence to prove they have an effect on the gut microbiome, or that they cause cancer and other crazy things you hear all over the internet.
Randomized control trials on HUMANS —that is right: not rats or petri dish bacteria— have shown no such effects for artificial sweeteners. They will not give you cancer, make you hungrier or make you gain weight.
When creating a snack for the kids at home, do not be afraid of using artificial sweeteners to make them taste sweet while keeping them healthy enough.
If you do not want to use Aspartame or Sucralose, you can go for the more “natural” options like Monk Fruit or Erythritol.
  • Substitute some of the regular ingredients with others with fewer calories:
Remember, it is all about finding balance. Instead of using regular peanut butter, you can use powder peanut butter which has half of the calories and more protein.
Rather than regular chocolate chips, you can use the sugar-free option.
  • Add some fruit to the equation:
As parents, we know how hard it can be to make our children eat fruits and veggies. However, if you sneak some fruits into their snack time, you can create the habit of eating them. A fruit pizza, natural ice cream, or fresh fruit with Greek yogurt will do the trick.

Do my children need to snack?

Well, not really. Nobody needs a snack, but they sure help when the days become too long.
But beyond that, summer days are hotter than any other day of the year. More heat leads to more energy consumption, and if we want our children to keep playing and having fun, a snack will help them with that extra kick of energy to keep the day going.
When creating summer snacks for kids, try to make snack recipes that will help them retain some cool on their little bodies. Watermelon popsicles and ice cream are fantastic options to refresh the day.
